Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has voiced strong opposition to the interim government’s decision to grant final approval for the establishment of a mission office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Dhaka for a three-year term.
Speaking at a protest rally after Jummah prayers today (11 july) in front of the northern gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Hefazat’s Joint Secretary General and Dhaka city Secretary Maulana Mamunul Haque said, “Allowing international agencies access before ensuring justice for 16 years of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and murders is an act of impunity for the perpetrators and an injustice to the people.”
“No one has given the government the right to dig a canal and bring in crocodiles. We will not allow the establishment of this human rights office in Dhaka,” Mamunul said.
“If the interim government does not immediately reverse its decision to approve the UN human rights office in Dhaka, Hefazat-e-Islam will be compelled to call for a nationwide movement,” Mamunul added.
